Da die Italiener das “Θ=Th” nicht aussprechen konnten, nannten sie den Hauptort Fira und die Insel einfach um in Santa Irene. Hier kann man aussuchen, ob man an Stränden mit roten, schwarzen oder gelben Sand baden will. Es ist traumhaft von Fira nach Oia (Ia) zu laufen immer mit Blick auf die Caldera und die Häuser am Hang. Überall in Griechenland kann man die Bilder von diesen Häusern und Kirchen kaufen.
Besonders spannend sind die Kreuzfahrschiffe. Wenn sie ankommen werden die Touristen mit kleinen Barkassen nach einander an Land gebracht. Hier warten sie geduldig entweder auf die Esel oder die Seilbahn, die sie von der Anlegestelle nach Fira bringen. Nach der Besichtigung warten sie wieder geduldig in der Hitze auf ihre Rückkehr.
Manche glauben, dass hier Atlantis versunken ist.
